BYU's dean of medicine, Mark Ott, and his wife, Stefanie Condie, shared their personal career journeys and three tips on building a unique career path with students of the German club.
Condie, a BYU alumna of the German and Russian program, has had a long career working in different industries. She obtained three master's degrees: one in international affairs from American University and two from Columbia University in business and journalism.
She emphasized that her career path was far from linear, while her husband, Ott, knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. She said her professional life unfolded through exploration, pivots and unexpected opportunities.
Stefanie Condie gave students of the BYU German club a presentation on how she created a successful career with a humanities degree. She said she wouldn't recommend anyone get three master's degrees like she did, but explained that success is possible with flexibility.
Condie gave students three tips to remember while venturing into their own career paths.
Tip 1: Design a career built to last
Condie said the key to longevity is understanding one's core strengths and building around them.
"In my mind, what ideology means is your core strengths," she said. "The things that you are naturally good at, and those are the things that should never change about you."
She warned that ignoring those strengths can lead to dissatisfaction and burnout.
"If you're in a job that isn't a good fit, you're not going to be happy, and you're probably not going to be very effective," she said.
Tip 2: Find the sweet spot between focus and flexibility
Condie's second tip encouraged students to remain flexible early in their careers while narrowing their focus to gain experience. She said experimenting is essential to understanding what is fulfilling and sustainable.
"The important thing is to get out there and try new stuff until you learn where your talents, interests and priorities pay off," Condie said.
She explained that balancing focus and flexibility creates balance when pursuing short- and medium-term goals in a way that allows for the unexpected.
Tip 3: Build a competitive advantage
Condie's final tip was to focus and position oneself to use their assets — strengths, aptitudes, skills and experience — and to reach one's aspirations — hopes and dreams.
"Building a career is a process of connecting three puzzle pieces in context with each other over and over again: your assets, your aspirations and market realities," she said.
She explained that market realities are what one may need to be willing to adjust to build a competitive advantage. This can be done by examining the opportunities that currently exist or by looking at what opportunities may be emerging.
Faithfully finding purpose in a career
Ott spoke after his wife and cautioned students against viewing goals as purely self-driven, encouraging them to consider a broader sense of purpose.
"I really think that the happiest people in the world are the ones who get the concept of why we are here," Ott said. "Not just in the room, but why we are here on earth?"
He emphasized that developing talents and skills should be viewed as preparation for serving others, rather than just advancing individual ambitions.
"God can use all of you," Ott said. "You don't have to be a professor or a dean to develop skills in an area you love and to feel when the spirit is telling you that you're good at something and that you can be really good at it."
Both Condie and Ott shared the words a former bishop once shared: "As you persevere, your path will become clear."
They encouraged students to keep moving forward even when outcomes are unclear.
